Hot would be the best word to describe the program at Ogilvie Raceway sponsored by Ray’s Autobody. With not a cloud in the sky and temperatures hovering around the 90 degree mark it was not easy to escape the heat. The race action would also be hot as the level of talent in the pits was top shelf.
Earning a trip to victory lane in the WISSOTA Dirt Track Racing Series were Dave Cain, Jody Bellefeuille, Dave Mass, Dan Ebert, Kevin Schmidt and Kyle Thell. Those trips were not easy to attain as a solid field of 99 cars hit the “BIG O” surface.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to green for the “BIG O Show” by JT Johnson and Dave Cain. Cain blasted out to the lead on the first circuit and would prove to be the only leader in the contest. A massive pile-up happened in turn 1 bringing out a caution on lap three. At least seven drivers ended up having an unscheduled meeting. Cain would dominate every lap of the main event taking the Tim’s Automotive Machine powered ride to a clean sweep. Dave Mass was charging hard trying to take the lead, but fell short landing in the runner-up position. Filling out the top five were Johnson, JB Stortz and Dustin Nelson.
Modified heat race victories were claimed by veteran driver Larry Zeller, Cain and Mass.
A Make-up Feature was also on the program from the weather challenged show on May 19th. Sitting on the front row were Keith Tourville and Brett Johnson. Johnson would take the early lead for the first two laps until being passed by Dave Mass on the third round. Mass took command of the race at that point and stayed there through lap fifteen. The lone yellows blinked on lap fifteen for Jason Voigt who lost his front left wheel exiting turn two. Jody Bellefeuille had been closing the gap between him and Mass on every lap. He made a final closure to that gap as he grabbed the lead on lap sixteen. He led all remaining laps riding the Texas Roadhouse car into victory lane. He was chased by Mass, Tourville, Dustin Nelson and Johnson.
Leading the WISSOTA Super Stock field to green in the Feature were Kyle Robideau and Donna Schmidt. Robideau led the race briefly for one lap when he was passed on the next round by Mass from a row three start. Mass continued his torrent pace in the ranks by commanding the lead for the rest of the event. Two yellow flags flew prior to mid-race, but had no influence on the outcome. Mass swept the field in his Affordable Chassis followed by Dan Gullikson, Mike Loomis, Josh Anderson and Robideau.
The Super Stock heat race wins went to Gullikson and Mass.
Chad Fouquette and Shane Gerwing would set the pace on row one for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. The main event would be a survival of the fittest as the caution flag reared its ugly head no less than six times. Fouquette had a short lead on lap one with Travis Schulte taking the front spot on the next circuit through lap six. Jeremy Nelson then became the third driver to take a shot at the checkers. He would remain there until the mid-point of the 20 lap race. Multiple efforts were required to complete lap eleven, but Dan Ebert climbed to the top of the hill to take control. He led the second half of the race in the Rapids Ford entry to land a spot in victory lane. Chasing him at the checkers were Nelson, Joe Voigt, Ryan Bowers and Tyler English after starting sixteenth.
The Midwest Modified heat winners were Nelson, Gerwing and Martini.
Leading the WISSOTA Street Stock field to the feature green were Adam Prieve and current National Rookie point leader, Brad Schmidt. John Adams grabbed the initial lead for the first seven circuits. Justin Pogones would become the second leader of the event on lap eight and led through lap twelve. Kevin Schmidt took the lead on lap thirteen and never looked back. He survived two restarts during his quest for the clean sweep in the TAVIS Metal Fabrication sponsored ride. Behind him at the finish were his son Brad, Jim Gullikson, Kyle Howland and Kurt Becken.
The Street Stock heat checkers were taken by Adam Prieve and Keith Tourville and Kevin Schmidt.
On the front row for the WISSOTA Mod-4 feature were Tommy McGough and Kyle Thell. Thell blazed a trail on the high-banked oval to pace the field for the first lap. He would be the only driver out front during the event which went without a single caution. He took the Stearns County Abstract Company car to the checkers trailed by McGough, Matt Halls, Corry VanMil and Chad Funt.
Thell capped off a sweep in the Mod-4 class by winning the heat race.
A strong field of Hornets required three heat races. They were won by Sam Lungstrom, Travis Swanson and Jameson Sietsema. Quain Busitsky bested the rest as he won the Feature.
The next event at Ogilvie Raceway will be an excellent race program on Saturday June 16th. Sprint Cars will be featured along with all six regular classes as the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series rolls into Ogilvie. The first green flag drops at 6:30pm. If you are looking for some exciting dirt track racing on a Saturday night, come to the “BIG O” for dirt track racing at its finest.
