Jun 23, 2012 - Schmidt Claims First Career Victory
Ogilvie Raceway
By: R.J. Sahlstrom (June 23)
The Ogilvie Raceway was the place to be for dirt track racing tonight in the program sponsored by Auto Value Part Stores. After a small amount of rain in the morning the skies cleared and the show would proceed as planned. Donna Schmidt wrote a page in racing history as she garnered her first career trip to victory lane in the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Taking top honors in the other WISSOTA Dirt Track Racing Series classes were Eric Martini, Jim Gullikson and Kyle Thell.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to green for the “Big O Show” by Eric Martini and Jason Voigt. Martini charged out to the lead for the first five laps when a caution came out for a car spinning in turn 2. Martini took over where he left off on the restart and would be there on lap twelve when the final caution appeared for another spin in turn 2. Martini then took command on the restart leading all remaining circuits taking the Martini Auto Parts rocket to the checkers. He turned in the fastest lap of the program as he clocked an 18.539 on his quest to the trophy. Behind him at the finish line were Voigt, JB Stortz, Brett Johnson and Clayton Wagamon.
Modified heat race victories were claimed by Stortz and B. Johnson.
Leading the WISSOTA Super Stock field to green in the Feature were Justin Haehn and Donna Schmidt. Donnie Lofdahl took the initial lead on lap one by .007 seconds. He would be out front for the first three laps. Schmidt made a pass for the lead on lap four and would be there when the caution came out for Lofdahl on lap eleven as he hit the turn 2 wall. Schmidt would maintain the lead on the following restart and took the Hohn’s Auto Body entry to a victory celebration for her first career Feature win ever. She was followed by Kyle Robideau, Brandon Englund, Haehn and Dexter Robyn.
The Super Stock heat race win went to Cale Berry.
Travis Schulte and Kevin Newgard would set the pace on row one for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Schulte took the initial lead as he would be out front for the first nine laps. Justin Oestreich would take a brief lead on lap ten only to see Schulte take it back on lap eleven. Oestreich then returned the favor on lap twelve and never looked back. He took the NATCO Transmission ride to an unofficial win and an apparent sweep. Due to unresolved issues the official results of the Main Event were not available at press time.
The Midwest Modified heat winners were Joe Voigt, Ryan Schleusner and Justin Oestreich.
Leading the WISSOTA Street Stock field to the feature green were Patrick Zerfas and John Adams. Zerfas took a brief lead on lap one only to be passed by Adams who would be there through lap eleven. The yellow flag appeared five times scattered throughout the race. Jim Gullikson became the third and final leader as he took the lead on lap twelve. He took the Tim’s Outboard sponsored ride to the finish chased by Adams, Kyle Howland, Mark Blood (from 14th) and Bill Cheney.
The Street Stock heat checkers were taken by Justin Pogones and Adams.
On the front row for the WISSOTA Mod-4 feature were Andrew Kresal and Tyler Larson. Larson grabbed the initial lead as he would front the rest for the first three laps. Kyle Thell then blazed a trail to the lead on lap four and took the JT Electric entry to the checkers. Thell’s trip to victory lane capped off a clean sweep for his efforts. The event went flag to flag without a blink from the caution lights. Behind Thell at the finish were Larson, Matt Halls, Kresal and Chad Funt.
Thell continued his winning ways as he won the heat race in the Mod-4 class.
The Hornet heat races were won by Larry Paulson, Nathan Swanson and Clay Blosberg. In the Feature Paulson took a ride to victory lane as he finished a clean sweep for the night.
The next event at Ogilvie Raceway will be a regular race program on Saturday June 30th. The first green flag drops at 6:30pm. If you are looking for some exciting dirt track racing on a Saturday night, come to the “BIG O” for dirt track racing at its finest.
