Smith, Bawden and Aderman Go Home Victorious as Sabraski Doubles Up on Night 1 of the MN Modified Nationals

By: Tami Jo Kuehn

Ogilvie, MN (May 28) – Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway welcomed drivers from the region Saturday night for Night 1 of the FYE Motorsports 17th Annual Wehrs Machine Minnesota Modified Nationals powered by M&B Services. Nearly 100 drivers checked in for the night of WISSOTA Dirt Track Race Action, and at the night’s end, Jake Smith, Tommy Bawden and John Aderman took home wins while Shane Sabraski snagged two.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were the first feature of the night with Jake Smith and Cole Boston on the front row. Smith claimed the immediate lead with Boston in second. Cars covered the whole race surface after just five laps were complete as contact occurred on the back stretch. It took the Midwest Modifieds a couple of tries to get the race back underway, but every time they took the green, Smith continuously drove away from the field. Mike Schnider and Boston battled for the second point, and as Smith prepped to lap drivers, Schnider secured second. Schnider looked ahead for Smith as Jason VandeKamp, who started 12th, slid to Boston’s door. VandeKamp and Boston battled for third amongst lapped traffic, and VandeKamp emerged with the point. VandeKamp began to chase down Schnider as the laps clicked off. Jake Smith was nearly 5 seconds ahead of his competitors as he took the checkered flags. Mike Schnider, Jason VandeKamp, Cole Boston and Zach Benson rounded out the top points.

Tommy Bawden and Robert Holtquist battled side by side for first as the WISSOTA Mod Fours feature went green. Dustin Holtquist slid into the third point and drove right behind the battle for first. Five laps had passed with Bawden and R. Holtquist door to door in the curves when Bawden edged out a lead. D. Holtquist raced to second and closed in on Bawden. Five laps remained for Bawden to take the win, however D. Holtquist was all over his rear. D. Holtquist kept pressure on Bawden, but as the checkers waved, Tommy Bawden snagged the win. Dustin Holtquist settled for second with Robert Holtquist, Tyler Larson and Tommy Pogones as the top finishers.

Shane Sabraski sped off with the lead in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature while Jordan Henkemeyer and Dexton Koch battled for second. After a caution, Henkemeyer raced to Sabraski’s door and they fought for first. A couple laps passed before Sabraski broke away from Henkemeyer as he retired to the infield with a mechanical issue. Another caution slowed the drivers, and as the race resumed, Koch dove to Sabraski’s door. Sabraski ran high, Koch ran low as they rounded the race surface. Sabraski was first at the line, but Koch hadn’t let off the gas and raced to his doors in the curves. Koch kept pressure on Sabraski as Jim Gullikson’s car slowed to a stop and a final caution was triggered. The race resumed with a handful of laps remaining, and Shane Sabraski led them all and took the win. Remaining top points went to Dexton Koch, Nick Traynor, Tanner Erickson and Jeff Frey.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were the next feature of the night with Brandon Dolman and Shane Sabraski on the front row. Sabraski pulled away with Dolman and Clayton Wagamon in tow. Sabraski built up an immediate lead while Wagamon and Dolman raced door to door. Wagamon grabbed the second point as the yellow waved for debris. The field was reset and as the green waved, Sabraski, Dolman and Wagamon spaced out in the top points. JT Johnson moved to the inside of Wagamon, and they closed in on Dolman. As they raced for points two through four, Dolman hit a bump in the track surface allowing Wagamon to move into the second point. Dolman raced back to the 14w’s side, and they remained glued to one another with Johnson close behind for a couple laps. Wagamon broke free of Dolman to secure second and Johnson took third. Sabraski began to battle slower traffic while the fight for fourth heated up. Dolman, Jody Bellefeuille, Johnny Broking and Brandon Copp raced door to door and four wide as the white flag waved. The drivers fighting for the fourth point swapped positions a few times that final lap as Shane Sabraski took his second win of the night. The fifth point went to Johnny Broking, fourth was claimed by Jody Bellefeuille with JT Johnson and Clayton Wagamon in third and second respectively.

Jesse Turnvall moved next to Brady Albertson for the lead as the WISSOTA Hornet feature began. Turnvall claimed the early lead as John Aderman moved aside Albertson. Aderman drove low on the track surface and advanced to Turnvall’s door. Aderman made the pass for the top point and put space between himself and Turnvall. After a few laps of green flag racing, Aderman caught slower drivers and the yellow flag appeared. Three cautions occurred within laps of each other, however Aderman continued to lead the way. John Aderman led the remaining laps to snag his first feature win ever while Jesse Turnvall, AJ House, Marcus Ammerman and Adam Throener wrapped up the top points.

Night 1 of the FYE Motorsports Wehrs Machine Minnesota Modified Nationals powered by M&B Services was in the books with the completion of the Hornet feature. Night 2 was scheduled for Sunday evening, however due to morning storms and the chance of more severe weather, the event was cancelled. The Ogilvie Raceway will take a week off of racing but will be back in action Saturday June 11th with Kids Night Meet The Drivers Night. Racing resumes at 6:30pm.
