Cain and Koch Shatter Sabraski's Event Sweep by Taking Wins on Night 2 of the MN Modified Nationals Presented by FYE Motorsports

Ogilvie, MN (May 28) – Sunday night wrapped up day two of the Wehrs Machine and Racing Products Minnesota Modified Nationals presented by FYE Motorsports, and both fans and drivers were treated to a night packed with WISSOTA Dirt Race Action. Shane Sabraski went in to the night ready to sweep the event features in both the WISSOTA Modifieds and Super Stocks, however Dave Cain and Dexton Koch put an end to that plan by winning their respective features. Zach Benson, Joe Wilber and Dustin Holtquist earned the other feature wins, which coincidentally, were their second straight feature wins of the weekend as well.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds took the clay with Jason VandeKamp and Zach Benson showing the way. Benson claimed the lead at the end of lap one, however VandeKamp and David Sweringen kept close. Swearingen rushed to the side of Benson and they raced door to door for the lead. Benson held the point and as they neared the half way point, Benson prepared to lap drivers. Just then the yellow waved and the drivers slowed. A series of cautions plagued the drivers keeping them at a stop and go pace, but when the final laps were complete, Benson still remained in command. Lucas Rodin and Swearingen continued to keep pressure on Benson as Rodin tried different grooves to get by the #17b. As the checkers waved, Zach Benson grabbed his second win of the event while Lucas Rodin, Jason VandeKamp, David Swearingen and Travis Schulte took points two through five.

Tommy Bawden grabbed the immediate lead in the WISSOTA Mod Four feature while Dustin Holtquist, Robert Holtquist and Tommy Pogones battled three-wide for second. Dustin Holtquist took the point and chased after Bawden when Bawden suddenly exited the race surface and retired to the infield. Dustin Holtquist inherited the lead with Pogones in second. A few cautions slowed the Mod Fours, but as the race resumed and laps went by, Dustin Holtquist held the lead and took his second win of the weekend. Remaining top points went to Robert Holtquist, David Slovick, Chad Funt and Gerrald Nohner.

After a quick immediate caution, the WISSOTA Super Stocks took the green with Andrew Johnson and Shane Sabraski on row one. Sabraski took the lead, Dexton Koch grabbed second, while Joey Jenson and Johnson battled for third. Trevor Nelson joined the fight for third as the drivers raced three-wide in the curve. Johnson fell to fifth leaving Jenson and Nelson door to door for third while Koch slid to Sabraski’s side. Koch dropped low on the track surface and worked the inside in an attempt to take the lead from the #7a. Sabraski and Koch raced parallel in the curves while Koch had a slight advantage on the straightaways. After a few laps of this same formation, Koch began to pull away from Sabraski and soon, Koch was alone in the lead. With seven laps to go, Koch and Sabraski caught slower cars. Koch was slowed as he found himself in lapped traffic, which allowed Sabraski to get back at his side. Dexton Koch again broke away from Sabraski, and had the advantage to snag the checkers and break Sabraski’s event sweep. Sabraski settled for second with Joey Jenson, Trevor Nelson and Jordan Hinkemeyer as top finishers.

The WISSOTA Modifieds rolled around the Big O in a four-wide formation to kick off their feature event, and as the race began, Brady Uotinen and Dave Cain brought the drivers to the stand. Two cautions in the first couple laps kept the drivers slow, but the remainder of the race went caution free. Cain claimed the top point but Shane Sabraski was on his rear. Drivers battled three-wide for positions throughout the field as Cain continued to keep Sabraski at bay. Cain and Sabraski separated themselves from the competition, and very soon, found slower traffic. Cain began to put drivers down a lap, but Sabraski remained glued to Cain’s #2c. Cain stretched his lead as he got a break from traffic, but Sabraski raced back to his side. They raced down the front cute side by side and crossed the line nose to nose. Again, Cain broke away from Sabraski however Sabraski was too close for comfort with five laps to go. Cain continued to see Sabraski’s bright orange car out the corner of his eye, as they raced three wide with lapped traffic. Cain nosed ahead of Sabraski as the white waved, and with the checkers in sight, Cain and Sabraski shot down the front stretch. Dave Cain joined Dexton Koch as a driver who broke Sabraski’s event sweep as he crossed the line first and took the win. Points two through five were claimed by Shane Sabraski, Adam Ayotte, Brennan Gave and Jake Smith.

The WISSOTA Hornets closed down the night with Joe Wilber, Bobie Arnes and Brady Albertson grabbing the top three points. Marcus Ammerman, Brandon Nyberg and Alex Aderman raced three-wide for fourth as Ammerman took the point. Ammerman quickly passed Albertson for third and began to track down Arnes. Wilber had a good lead established as the yellow waved and the field was reset. Wilber brought the drivers back to green with Arnes in second. With only two laps to go, Arnes dropped low on the surface and drove to the door of Wilber. They remained side by side the entire final lap, but Joe Wilber held his position and took his second win of the weekend. After drivers completed post-race tech, Marcus Ammerman was awarded the second point with Brandon Nyberg, Alex Aderman and Brady Albertson as the top five.

Next Saturday, the World of Outlaw Sprint cars will visit Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway for the first time ever. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and Micro Sprints will accompany the WoO Sprints with racing scheduled to start at 7:30pm. Tickets are available online for this exciting event.
