Bobby Pierce Wins $50,000 Pay Day After Besting His Competition in a Caution-Free 50 Lap Feature Wednesday Night!

By: Tami Jo Kuehn

Ogilvie, MN (July 3) – On a Wednesday afternoon, under beautiful sunny skies, the XR Series rolled into Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway and hosted the Minnesota Mega featuring the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and a $50,000 payday for the Super Dirt Late Models. A total of 71 drivers checked in to race the night and between the two features, 75 laps were raced with just one caution occurring. Jason VandeKamp won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, while Bobby Pierce won the Super Dirt Late Model feature and big pay day.

The Super Dirt Late Models took the clay first for their 50 Lap race event presented by XR Events. Ricky Thornton Jr and Devin Moran brought the stacked field of drivers to green, and Thornton Jr claimed the immediate lead. Moran grabbed second while Bobby Pierce moved his way from sixth to the third point in the opening laps. Moran kept close to Thornton Jr while Pierce chased after the leaders. With 10 laps completed, Thornton Jr, Moran and Pierce began to lap slower drivers allowing Pierce to drive to second. Thornton Jr remained in command, but as laps went by, Pierce tracked down the #20RT. Pierce wasted no time and made the pass for first as cars covered the entire track surface. Laps continued to click by with drivers going two and three-wide around the Big O. Fans watched in awe as the drivers wrapped up the 50 Lap event in just over 13 minutes with no cautions, and when the checkers flew, Bobby Pierce snagged the win and big payout. Devin Moran, Ricky Thornton Jr, Ryan Gustin and Tyler Erb rounded out the top points at the race’s conclusion.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were next, and many wondered if they could run as clean of a race as the Super Late Models. Jason VandeKamp and Tyler Vernon led the drivers to the stand, and as the green waved, VandeKamp took the lead. Vernon held second and Cole Boston claimed third as VandeKamp stretched his lead. Vernon held second and Brandon Jensen challenged Boston for third when David Swearingen sped by and took the point. The top drivers found themselves amongst lapped traffic as VandeKamp continued to lead the way. Just then, a driver spun and didn’t make it safely off the race surface and the yellow light flickered on. With five laps remaining on the scoreboard, the only caution of the night occurred. VandeKamp came through the curve to bring the drivers back to green and felt the heat of Vernon and Swearingen on his rear. When the green waved, drivers were four-wide for positions as they shot down the front-chute. Jason VandeKamp however held his lead the remaining laps and took the win with David Swearingen, Zach Benson, Tyler Vernon and Wyatt Boyum as the top five finishers.

The final checkers had flown, and the Minnesota Mega event was in the books. Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway will be back in action on Saturday night, July 6th, for our annual Fireworks Spectacular night. Racing will resume at 6:30pm with fireworks to follow the program.
